New Jersey Discovered Football. And a Dinosaur. And Basically Everything Else.

Ten things about the Garden State that most history books quietly skip over — and why they matter more than you’d think.


There is a particular kind of historical injustice that happens to places rather than people. New Jersey has been on the receiving end of it for about two hundred years. Dismissed as a corridor between New York and Philadelphia, reduced in the popular imagination to turnpike exits and chemical plants, the state has watched credit for its own history drift northward or southward depending on which larger city had better publicists.

The record deserves correcting. Not out of regional pride — though there’s nothing wrong with that — but because the actual history is genuinely strange and consequential, and losing it to geography-based condescension costs all of us something.


The Dinosaur That Changed Science, Then Left the State

Start with 1858, because that year is as good a hinge point as any for understanding what New Jersey actually contributed to the modern world.

In Haddonfield, a small Quaker town in Camden County, a fossil hunter named William Parker Foulke was visiting friends when he heard local gossip about some enormous bones that had been pulled from a marl pit decades earlier. The bones had been scattered, some given away as curiosities. Foulke, methodical and well-connected, arranged for a proper excavation. What he found — with the scientific assistance of anatomist Joseph Leidy of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia — was something the world had never seen assembled before: a nearly complete skeleton of what Leidy would formally name Hadrosaurus foulkii.

The significance of this cannot be overstated, and it usually is not stated at all.

Before Haddonfield, dinosaurs were understood primarily from fragmentary European finds — teeth, scattered bones, partial impressions. Scientists knew these creatures had existed. They did not know, with any certainty, how they stood. The prevailing assumption, borrowed from the anatomy of large lizards, was that dinosaurs moved on four legs, low to the ground, spreading outward like enormous reptiles.

Hadrosaurus foulkii demolished that assumption. Leidy’s analysis of the skeleton’s bone structure — particularly the striking difference in length between the forelimbs and hindlimbs — suggested strongly that this animal had walked upright, bipedally, something like an enormous kangaroo. When the skeleton was mounted and publicly displayed in Philadelphia in 1868, it became the first mounted dinosaur skeleton in the history of the world. Crowds lined up to see it. It traveled to exhibitions in New York and London. It sparked a popular obsession with prehistoric life that has never entirely faded.

Which is worth sitting with for a moment: the cultural phenomenon that would eventually produce Jurassic Park, the Smithsonian’s dinosaur halls, and generations of children who can pronounce Pachycephalosaurus before they can ride a bicycle — that phenomenon has a specific origin point. Menlo Park Was Not a Garage

The mythology of American invention loves the garage. The scrappy outsider, working alone, surrounded by chaos, producing genius from nothing. It is a flattering story, and it is largely false.

Thomas Edison understood something that the garage mythology misses entirely: invention, at scale, requires infrastructure. It requires teams of specialists, systematic experimentation, organized failure, and the institutional patience to pursue ideas that won’t pay off for years. In 1876, Edison built exactly that infrastructure, in Menlo Park, New Jersey.

The Menlo Park laboratory was not a workshop. It was the world’s first purpose-built industrial research facility — a complex that employed dozens of specialists and ran twenty-four hours a day. Edison called it an “invention factory” and set himself the goal of producing a minor invention every ten days and a major one every six months. This was not boasting. Between 1876 and 1882, the Menlo Park facility produced, among other things, a practical incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, and the foundational work on electrical power distribution systems.

The phonograph alone warrants stopping. In December 1877, Edison recorded and played back a human voice for the first time in history. The voice said “Mary had a little lamb.” It was recorded and reproduced in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The entire subsequent history of recorded music — every album, every streaming platform, every earphone ever manufactured — traces its genealogy to that specific moment in that specific place.

Edison himself was an immigrant’s story before immigration was a popular subject. His family had Dutch and English roots; he grew up in Ohio and Michigan; but the work that defined his legacy and changed human civilization happened in New Jersey, in a building that no longer exists, on a site that is now a state park largely unknown to the millions of people who drive past it every year on their way somewhere else.


The Field Where Football Began, Sort Of

On November 6, 1869, Rutgers College and the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) played a game on a field in New Brunswick. Twenty-five players per side. No timeouts. No forward passes. No standardized rules in any modern sense — the two schools had agreed on a rough set of guidelines for the occasion, borrowing loosely from association football and making adjustments as they went.

Rutgers won, six goals to four.

This game is widely cited as the first intercollegiate football game in American history, and by the most reasonable definition, it was. The qualifications matter, though, and they’re more interesting than the simple claim. What was played in New Brunswick in 1869 bore a closer resemblance to rugby and soccer than to the sport that would eventually define autumn Saturdays across the country. Players could not carry the ball. Scoring came from kicking it through goals. The game was chaotic, improvisational, and by most surviving accounts, enormously entertaining.

Formal rules for American football as a distinct sport wouldn’t be established for another twenty-five years, through the work of organizations and committees that had nothing to do with New Jersey. In that sense, calling 1869 the birth of football is complicated — but no more complicated than calling 1903 Kitty Hawk the birth of aviation, or calling Alexander Graham Bell’s 1876 demonstration the birth of the telephone. Origin stories in technology and culture are always messier than the plaques suggest.

What happened in New Brunswick was genuinely first. Two universities competed in an organized athletic contest using a ball, established rules, and a scoring system. Whatever you call the sport — and the naming is legitimately contested — the competitive tradition that eventually became American college football started on a New Jersey field, two years before Ulysses S. Grant’s first term ended.


A Christmas Night, an Icy River, and a Revolution Saved

The crossing of the Delaware on Christmas night, 1776, is one of the most painted moments in American history — Emanuel Leutze’s famous image of Washington standing in a boat is probably more familiar to most Americans than any photograph from the same era.

Less discussed is what happened after the crossing: Washington and his exhausted Continental Army landed in New Jersey. The surprise attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton — executed in darkness and brutal cold, against professional soldiers who had every material advantage — produced not just a tactical victory but a psychological one at a moment when the Revolution was genuinely close to collapse. Enlistments were expiring. Morale had cratered. The British held New York and were preparing for what many expected to be a decisive final campaign.

Trenton changed the calculation. It demonstrated that Washington could win. It bought time, recruits, and the fragile thing that armies run on above all else: belief that victory is possible. New Jersey was not just the location of a battle. It was the place where the American Revolution found its footing.


Why New Jersey History Keeps Escaping New Jersey

There is a pattern running through all of this, and it is worth naming directly.

The Haddonfield dinosaur ended up in Philadelphia. Edison’s legacy is claimed by everyone and curated in museums from Washington to Dearborn, Michigan. The football game in New Brunswick is celebrated by Rutgers and remembered by almost no one else. The Delaware crossing is named for a river that forms the border with Pennsylvania, and the paintings hang elsewhere.

New Jersey has a persistent problem with credit — not because its history is thin, but because it sits between two of the most powerful cultural gravity wells in the American Northeast. New York and Philadelphia have absorbed, reframed, and sometimes simply annexed the history produced in the territory between them for going on three centuries. The Garden State’s contributions to science, technology, culture, and warfare have been real and consequential. Their attribution has been inconsistent.

This matters beyond regional vanity. History shapes identity, and identity shapes investment — in education, in preservation, in the kind of civic pride that keeps a community connected to its own past. When a state’s history is systematically undervalued, so eventually is its present.

The marl pit in Haddonfield is a state landmark. The Menlo Park site is a state park. The field in New Brunswick has a plaque. These are not nothing. But they are quieter than the discoveries deserve, and considerably less visited than they would be if the popular understanding of New Jersey matched the actual record.


What New Jersey Actually Is

New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country — a fact usually cited as a punchline, but which has always been a consequence of something more interesting: this has been, for four hundred years, a place where people arrived, built things, made things, and changed the world while everyone else was looking at the cities on either side.

The turnpike is real. The diners are excellent. The exits are numbered. And underneath all of it is a history that includes the first dinosaur, the first recorded sound, the first intercollegiate football game, and a Christmas night river crossing that kept a revolution alive.

That is not nothing. That is, by most measures, quite a lot.
